What Causes Bad Cold With Sore Throat?

Hello, Dr. Rynne. I have had a bad cold and was told by CVS pharmacy to take the CVS brand of Mucinex DM. They are uncoated, but I never had trouble. I started to get a little heartburn and then last night I took one and it felt like it got stuck. Now, I have pain when I swallow or when the gas comes up. Mind you, I m still coughing periodically. Is it just a raw throat or heartburn? How can I get this feeling in the back of my throat to ease up? Thank you!

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, local irritation or ulceration because of some medicines is not uncommon when sometimes it gets stuck up in upper food passage especially in uncoated or capsular preparations though the medicine you mentioned is not the usual culprit. The other reason can be painful swallowing because of throat infection which can accompany or can be cause for cough. Please take a proton pump inhibitor with syrup mucain gel and things should be fine. If the pain is very severe, please take syrup sucralfate also thrice daily before meals. Regards
