What Causes Bad Body Odour And Excessive Perspiration In An Adolescent?

I am the mom of an 18 yr. old female with persistent severe cystic acne and oily skin since puberty (2 rounds of acutane didn t work, finally a combo of Aczone and Tazorac have helped tremendously), excessive perspiration and body odor most of her life, diagnosed in early childhood with non classical mild congenital adrenal hyperplasia but has not been receiving treatment since middle school as she was released by the endocrinologist due to stable and regulated hormone levels, endocrine testing all came back within normal range about a year ago, weight gain has been steady over the last 2 years (gained 30lbs., from 120-150, 5 5 tall), has healthy eating habits and exercises regularly. Big self esteem issues! How do we help her?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Foul body odor is mainly for two reasons- the secretion of skin glands and skin flora fermenting these secretions. An overgrowth of flora on the skin can cause the smell to be more prominent. I would advise that you should go out on a walk and sweat outside so that stagnation of secretion can be prevented. Get your sugar levels and renal functions evaluated. Get a good deodorant and use thrice a day.

Use medicated soap in place of routine toilet soap. I would advise Dettol/Savlon. Cut down on fried fatty snacks/foods and the poultry products. If still the trouble stays then you can take a course of Clindamycin/Doxycycline antibiotics after consulting your physician. Please have a re-look in view of my suggestions. You would have a solution to your problems but it will not bring the change overnight at-least 7-10 days would be needed for optimum control and then it has to be maintained.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
