What Causes Attacks Of Migraine While On Treatment For Binge Eating?

I m a 42 year old female participating in Shires Clinical Research Study testing Vyvanse as a possible treatment for binge eating. I have been participating in the test since April 2014 (for the past 5 months) and I have been on 70 mg per day for the past four months without any serious side effects or issues. Over the past 8 days I have been experiencing severe migraine headaches. So severe they wake me up out of a sleep due to the pain. Today, during my routine follow up appointment, I spoke with the MD running the study and told him about these recent issues. I told him that I thought the migraines could possible be due to dramatic weather fluctuation (one day it s 80 degrees & humid and then within 12 hours the temp drops to 45 degrees). I told him I wasn t sure if I was experiencing a side effect to the Vyvanse or if it was caused by something unrelated. He then brought to my attention that my blood pressure which is normally around 120/78 (and was confirmed at my initial baseline testing prior to starting the study) has become elevated throughout the course of the study (it s in the 140/80-90 range) still normal range but has become increasing higher throughout the course of the study. Again, today I have suffered most of the day with another severe migraine attack. I am unable to get relief from 3 Motrin IB and 2 OTC migraine tablets, I m desperate for relief. I do not want to discontinue the study as It is has changed my life. But I also cannot function with severe migraine headaches, nausea, and lightheaded feelings. Can you recommend OTC treatment that could provide me with some relief. Unfortunately, I have a $5,000 deductible before my insurance provides any type of coverage (and I pay $600 per month for health insurance for my family) funds are limited, so a trip to the ER would exceeds my financial means. Any treatment suggestions would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Hello!
Thank you for the question.
I understand your concern.
In my opinion the headaches you are having are related to Vyvanse treatment.
I would recommend you Naproxene as an OTC drug which will help you to reduce headache and also can help in reducing the frequency. Indomethacine suppository too are helpful twice daily. You must be careful because they can increase your blood pressure.
If I were your doctor I would probably treat you with propranolol or verapamil to reduce the migraine frequency and also help reduce your blood pressure. Topamax is another therapy, antiepileptic , which can also reduce migraine attacks and make you lose weight. But these drugs are not given without doctor prescription.
Finally you should talk to your doctor if you want to discontinue the therapy with vyvanse because it can cause serious side effects.
Hope to have been helpful.
Best wishes Dr. Abaz Quka
