General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.

There are many different reasons for infants to cry and wake up ranging from simple ones like night terrors to more serious ones like any lung or heart problem.

If your infant is struggling for breath and is falling short of oxygen, he is not able to have a comfortable sleep and the lack of oxygen is forcing him to wake up and cry. It is not a very good sign.

If he has this problem since a few days and has a cold or a blocked nose - keeping him in a propped uo position and saline nasal drops may be all that is required for him to sleep comfortably.

If he has been doing this for a long time and struggles for breath while feeding or crying or turns blue sometimes, he needs to be seen by a paediatrician immediately. Also, if he is running a high fever or is breathing very fast and is lethargic and feeding poorly, he needs immediate treatment.

Hope this helps.

Dr Geeta
