Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Allergic Skin Reaction After Receiving Heparin Injection?
I had a DVT one week ago. I had injections of heparin for 4 days while simultaneously taking Wafarin. My PCP switched my RX to name-brand Coumadin on Saturday. Since then I have developed hives (or some kind of skin reaction) that look like small insect bites in clusters up and down my arms, legs, fingers and toes. It is also on other areas of my body. They itch and do not go away. I do not believe these are insect bites as they are too prominent and I have not been outdoors. I called my doctor, but she has not returned my call. Four years ago I had a DVT and took Coumadin. I did not have that reaction then.
* There are rare instances of reaction to Heparin through cell-mediated events in particular individuals.
* The sensitivity to Coumdain and Warfarin is more common even if previously one had tolerated the same molecule, the body can change mechanics for the same to refuse next time.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
