What Causes Abnormally Large Gaps In Brain Of Infant?

My 6 month old nephew had his brain scanned yesterday and the doctor says there are abnormal large gaps in his brain. Obviously my brother and his wife are upset and don't want to talk about it right now. Is there anything you can tell me about what might be going on?

IT is important to know if the child had any infections of the brain - encephalitis or meningitis in the newborn period. THese severe infections may leave large vacoules in the brain ( lacune). It may also be a condition called hydrocephalus which is treatable.

Please get the scan pictures scanned and uploaded, my answer will be better if i can see the scans. How is the child's activity. ?
