What Causes Abnormal Behavior While On Wellbutrin?
My 93 year old mother in law started taking Wellbutin 2 1/2 weeks ago. She seemed to benefitting from the drug until two nights ago when she became very suspicious of her son and believed he was an imposter trying to trick her. She had a very malevolent look in her eyes as she watched his every move and questioned him on his middle name, etc. trying to prove he was not really her son.
I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.
Wellbutrin (bupropion) has some side effects just like all other medications. It can cause confusion, anxiety, psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia etc. These side effects are not very common. So, I feel your mother-in-law is experiencing the side effects of bupropion.
Why was she prescribed Wellbutrin 2 weeks back? Was it for depression? If she has depression, maybe she could take an SSRI like Fluoxetine or Citalopram. I would advise you to see her psychiatrist to get help.
I hope this answer has helped you.
Thank you Regards Dr Sunita Sayammagaru
