What Causes Abdominal Cramps And Diarrhea After Having Food?

Seems like every time I eat I get abdominal cramps followed by loose stools and sometimes diarrhea. I recently ate lactose free ice cream but still got sick with the above. I avoid lactose containing foods but still get ill. I have always had IBS but it has not affected my life until now (age 61). I haven t had any weight loss nor have I seen visible blood in my stool. The only medication I take if Effexor for depression 150mg /daily. I have only mild nausea when I get sick.. sometimes it last for up to 12 hours. any ideas....

Hi,

IBS can cause abdominal cramps and loose stools with meals and maybe you are having a flare up of it. You may help by taking some probiotics to help improve the local flora in the bowel. Avoiding milk may be helpful but also avoiding very sweet food as sugar can stimulate the bowel and cause cramps and loose stools.

Taking some fiber with diet and supplement might help improve the symptoms as well.If you notice no improvement with these in 1 week or you notice any worsening you will need to see your doctor.

Generally every patient over 50 years of age needs a colonoscopy routinely every 10 years and if you have not had one might be a good idea to have one now.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
