What Causes A Tender Spot Above The Ear Post Head Injury?

Hi, I was hit on the side of my head with a sippy cup (hard). It hurt immediately and the pain has subsided in my head mostly..still a little tender. My jaw is sore opening my mouth to yawn and I do have a bump that is tender to touch right above my right ear. Is this something I should get looked at, or should I be fine? I ve been reading scary things online about hitting your head in that area, so I m kind of worried. Thanks

Hello,

I can understand your concern. As you are having a bump near your ear and your jaw is hurting while opening wide, it is possible that you have hurt your temporomandibular joint, joint near ear that helps in opening and closing of jaws along with side to side movements.

I would advise you to visit a dentist for examination of the joint. If there would be an injury to the joint, the dentist will be able to diagnose it with physical examination and x-ray of the area. If there would be no injury, then the injury will be just due to the blow of the accident and it will heal on its own as the days will pass.

If you are in too much pain right now, you can take Ibuprofen 400 mg or Ketorolac 10 mg up to thrice a day to ease the pain. Local heat application to the area will also help.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
