What Causes A Sharp Pain In The Head?

I just had a sharp electric like pain in my high high neck or back of head. I used to get these a lot as a kid. They sporadically happen after a movement of my head. This one woke me up out of my sleep. It s like a quick jolt and then goes away but is very painful. It s on the inside. The only thing I can do is hold my head when it happens. It almost feels like it s a tension thing.

Hello!

Thank you for your question on HCM!
I appreciate your concern!

Your symptoms seem to be caused by an occipital neuralgia.

It is an irritation of the occipital nerve which lies on the back of the head. It may be pressed during sleeping or from degeneration of the cervical column.

I would recommend you to consult with your GP and have a cervical column xray.

For the pain relief I would advise to take indomethacine twice daily for some days.
A good pillow would be helpful.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Aida
