What Causes A Sensation Of Dry Spot In Throat Behind The Tongue?

I get the sensation of a dry spot in my throat about an inch or so down on the back side of my tongue. Taking a drink or getting a bite of something does not help. Cough drops don't help either. I cough until I start dry heaving. I have never actually thrown up yet. The only thing I've found that stops the sensation is a throat numbing spray or the same in a hard lozenge, like Cloraseptic. I've had my tonsils removed and I don't smoke or drink.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sensation of dry spot in throat behind the tongue which could be because of enlarged filiform papillae of tongue, increased stress level and due to dehydration. It could be due to throat infection as well.

Need not to worry. You should maintain basic oral hygiene by brushing and flossing daily. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Keep applying petroleum jelly on that to avoid itching. You should visit oral pathologist once if your symptoms still persists. Get biopsy done by taking scrapings from tongue to rule out any oral malignancy or thrush. Gently scrape tongue with tongue cleaner to remove debris attached to that area.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
