What Causes A Painful Lump In The Armpit?

Hi, Nearly 2 weeks ago, woke up with a lump in armpit that was sore, if felt like a cyst, i have had them before, but without pain. It felt like it was very tender. It ended up in a light bruise, but the pain/tenderness moved to around to the side of my body. Again tender and felt like a bruise. Another mark on skin showed up. I haven t done pulled or used my muscles in an unusual way, I just woke up like this. It hasn t been quiet 2 weeks yet. Other symptoms are vague. Slight breathlessness, today a little bit of diarrhoea. I am sleeping well, but feel tired. I have been on Femme-Tab Ed 20/100 for about 4months. I was on microgynon low dose for a number of years. I am 44, 2 children and not pregnant.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

I have gone through your symptoms and history and following is my answer:

Since you have felt this lump from 4-5 years now, one of the most common reason is a lipoma (accumulation of fat tissue).

It correlates with your symptoms, it gets bigger with the passing of time, doesn't hurt, soft to touch. The discomfort that you've described might be due to the contact to the nerves near it and the veins of the armpit.

I'd suggest you do an ultrasound of this lump and consult a surgeon. If needed s/he will ask for a fine needle biopsy for the diagnose and do a surgery to remove the lipoma.

Don't worry, if this is the diagnosis, it is a benign condition and it can be removed easily.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
