What Causes A Painful Bruise On The Toe?

Will I grow a toe nail back after I lose one. I believe I wore a shoe size too small; each size of shoe varies from brand to brand. My big toe nail on right foot got bruised and now i am missing part of it. I had to trim it down with nail clippers because part of it came out of my big toe but part of it is still in my big toe. Will it come out eventually and I assume i will grow a new toe nail in my big toe? It don t hurt but it looks funny.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Toenails can fall off due to trauma and infections and pressure caused by a smaller size shoe can be a reason for the nail separating from the nail bed.
Since there is no infection, according to what you say, it is reasonable to expect the nail to grow naturally back in three to six months without treatment. You may remove any lose part and bandage your toe. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the entire nail in order to encourage proper healing and regrowth.
It there is increased pain, swelling, redness, discoloration, a bad smell or discharge please see a doctor, as these are signs of infection and needs medication.

I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
