What Causes A Feeling Of Choking Or Gagging?

I have had to try and clear my throat from phlegm from a supposed chest infection and now I have a feeling that I am choking or gagging. I did have to strain rather hard to move the mucus but now at night I find myself panicing as I can breathe out but not breathe in especially at night. It does not hurt for me to swallow.
