What Causes A Child To Throw His Head Backwards?

My daughter is almost 8 months old and we noticed when she is standing on her own she will randomly throw her head back and look at the ceiling....she can be focused on someone talking to her and in the middle of a smile or whatever she will just throw her head back. she also randomly rocks her head about the rocks in the middle of a crawl sometimes. i thought maybe she could have water in her ear, but now i don t know.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

How long this episodes last? Any associated up rolling of eyes or falls? How is her overall development otherwise? The only things we need to rule out is myoclonic jerks or infantile spasms. In spasms, usually head falls forward, and not backwards. It will be quite helpful if you can do a video recording and send to us to ascertain what it is.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
