Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dr. Ryne: after prostate surgery I developed a blister that became a deep sore very near the site of the indwelling catheter. I suspect a reaction to the adhesive in the patch used to hold the catheter in place. I saw an ER physician re this sore; he thought it was beginning to heal (two weeks duration; it is a bit better now) and prescribed clindamycin for seven days as a protective measure in the event the sore was related to a staph or Mersa infection (but not c. difficile, unfortunately). I have take the antibiotic for six of the seven days and have become increasingly convinced that it is negatively interfering with the healing of the prostate after surgery (the post-surgical symptoms are intensifying instead of abating). Today I noticed for the first time that my skin has become quite sensitive (especially back and arms) and it seems to come under the heading of a severe reaction. Would you advise stopping the clindamycin, or would you advise taking the last four (five actually) doses to finish the course of treatment? I would appreciate any assistance you might feel able to give. Thank you Phillip Bamman Santa Fe, New Mexico
Since you feel that Clindamycine is not helping in healing of the penile ulcer, it may be wise to take a swab from the ulcer and also take urine and send both for bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity test. This may take up to 72 hours for the report to come. Till then you may please continue with Clindamycine, and change over to culture specific antibiotic if required. Also local application of Mupirocin ointment on the penile ulcer twice daily would help.
