What Causes HSV2 Infection?

I have had a relationship with my now fiance over a year and two weeks ago I had a fever for a day then a small genital breakout . my blood test showed HSV 1 and 2, she was tested last year with only HSV 1 positive hse has had long time. what perplexes us is that now she shows positive for HSV 2 , I had not been tested so im not sure if I had it or not , but isnt the flu and being fatigued indicative of an initial contact? or could i have very well had it for years ?
