What causes Bright s disease?

Thank you. I had Brights disease at the age of four yrs old. My parents told me the Dr. said it was caused by a chill. My treatment was to have 4 quarts of dairy products daily, ten minutes of sun bathing, never to be served strong tea. My question is what is considered the real cause. Does it have anything to do with caffeine which I didn t have at 4 yrs of age. I do believe a chill in the back offsets a bladder or kidney infection. and have had those problems sometimes over the years. This was in the yr. 1929 and of course I am very elderly now but am still mystified.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Bright's disease is inflammation of the entire structure of the kidney, it has many degrees and forms.Happens due to the action of cold or toxic agents upon the kidney. The diet should be bland and unirritating to recover , as the cold or toxic agents have damaged the entire or part of renal tissue. As for caffeinated agents, those give vazoconstriction of renal glomeruli that's why are not good for your kidney. An urine sample is always done to make the diagnosis and treatment option.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
