What Cause Swelling In Legs Followed By Hip Replacement?

I had total hip replacement two months ago. My leg and foot swelling went down and was almost completely gone. Now I am experiencing foot/ankle/ lower calf swelling. I eat a pretty healthy diet, omega 3's, whole grains, low sodium. I was wondering if inactivity due to planning to have the other hip replaced before the end of the year could be the cause of the swelling? Any thing else you could recommend that I do, as too much walking etc is very painful. Bad his is almost totally fused and laying down is also painful. Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
One of the most common causes of post-hip replacement surgery, foot ankle and calf swelling is a deep vein thrombosis(DVT). Due to immobility about the peri-operative time, and also for yet unknown reasons, clots tend to form around the lower limb, during orthopaedic joint replacement or lower limb surgeries lasting more than an hour. You might require to have a doppler scan done. Whether the scan confirms a clot or not, it is a good idea to wear TED(thrombo-embolic deterrent) stockings from toes up to your groin. Speak to your doctor, if you might require to take a clot busting or clot thinning medication, along with the stockings, if a clot is found on the scan.

Hope this helps
