Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother has been acting like she has dementia but the hospital has ruled out everything else but we mentioned that three people that we know have had similar almost exact symtons and they have had a uti infection. I asked Dr. If this was a possibility but he says they did a urinalysis and the urine was cloudy but they haven t done a culture?
You are right infections sometimes can make a person act like dementia. However, of the urine analysis was done which would rule out infection then it's unlikely to be secondary to UTI.
Another thing is that dementia caused by UTI or other infections is of sudden onset like few days and do not gradually progress But we always need to rule it out bu doing a urine analysis. Culture is not mandatory.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
