What Are The Possible Treatments For Ulcer On Foot ?

Hi my father is 84 years> He has had an ulcer on his left foot which took over a year to heal. Now, following a skin irritation on the side of his other foot it looks like another one is forming. He is being treated with antibiotics and the nurse is dressing it twice to three times a week. What is the cause and why does it take so long to heal?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Following are the possible treatments & preventive measures for ulcer of foot.
1. Keep diabetes under control, if he is diabetic.
2. To check for neuropathy/vasculopathy & take treatment of the same, especially in diabetic patients.
3. Frequent change of position (avoid keeping foot in dependent position for prolonged periods).
4. Maintenance of local hygiene.
5. Wearing appropriate shoe with soft sole to equally distribute weight.
6. Treatment consists of frequent dressings & if necessary antibiotics, improving nutrition with balanced diet with or without nutritional supplements.
It takes a long time for ulcer to heal once it forms. Normally ulcer forms either due to neuropathy: in which case due to lack of sensation there is frequent injury leading to ulcer formation OR vasculopathy which leads to reduced blood supply & hence ischemia.
Wish him good health & speedy recovery.
