What Are The Known Birth Defects Of Dong Quai?

Hi I m 18 weeks pregnant today and when I found out I was 5 weeks already . Immediately I started taking 1,000 mg of Dong Quai & 1,180 mg of black cohosh every 4 hour for 5 days . I understand the 5th through 12th week are very important to the development of the brain . What are known birth defects of dong quai?

Dong Quai is potentially unsafe for the baby if taken in first three months of pregnancy. It causes congenital birth defects but there is very little data available on specific effects this herbal medicine causes on the wellbeing of the baby.

Actually, Dong quai affects the muscles of the uterus and is sometimes used as an abortifacient herbal drug. You need not worry and I suggest you to consult your Obstetrician for referring you for congenital birth defect screening Ultrasound.
