Hi.
I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.
Clostridium difficile infections either subsides within few weeks of starting antibiotic treatment or few cases will become carriers with
diarrhea, severe colitis and may have multiple relapses.
So repeated infection not only affects the colon but also other systems like blood, kidney, liver resulting in shock & death.
However, higher rates of reinfection & recurrence is documented with in few weeks to months of stopping the antibiotics, which demands additional therapy.
Best treatment for relapses would be,
1.Repeated dose of either oral
metronidazole or
vancomycin for 10–14 days. But successful in only 50% of patients.
2. Fecal microbiota
transplantation (FMT) can be tried in patients with more recurrences & failure antibiotic treatment. It has 80%-90% success rate.
3. Probiotics (yogurt, other fermented foods etc) intake will help in the growth of good gut bacteria & minimise the risk of reinfection with C diff.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
