What Are The Chances Of Pregnancy When On Mirena IUD?

Hi, Is it likely for me to be pregnant on the IUD (mirena)? I have all the symptoms of pregnancy. Intencifiying smell, weight gain, nausea/vomiting, always tired, mood swings, no period for months, enhanced appetite and bloating. The thing that brought me to you is that I also have symptoms on a tubal pregnancy. Abdominal pain in my left side along with vaginal pain. It comes and goes randomly/instantly. When I go 1 or 2 in the bathroom I get a pain in the same lower abdomin left side. Occasional brownish mucus looking menstral discharge, stomach spasm/flutter on left side, lower back pain every day on and off through out the day. Periodic menstral cramps but no period ever follows. Also my IUD strings seem to be shorter than normal. I have taken 2 at home tests I the past 2 weeks but both have came back negative. Even though my tests keep coming up negative and I m probably just over reacting should I still go to the doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is very unlikely to become pregnant while using a Mirena IUD, as it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, in rare cases, pregnancy can still occur with an IUD in place, particularly if the device has become dislodged or has shifted position.
The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to several factors, including hormonal changes, stress, or possible tubal pregnancy, which is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention. It is important to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the cause of your symptoms and to rule out any potential complications. Your healthcare provider may recommend additional testing, such as an ultrasound, to evaluate the IUD's position and check for the presence of tubal pregnancy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
