What Are Papaverine And Alprostadil Used For?

I went to a men s health clinic and they, without warning, injected my penis with two drugs: papaverine and Alprostatazil. it was supposed to be a mild dose to help with erectile issues after a prostate operation. There was a doctor present (at least claimed to be an MD) and then they wanted me to pay $5,000 for a series of self administered injection protocols, three times per week. They claimed that I had poor blood flow through my penis due to vascular degeneration. They said, after doing some sort of ultra sound test, that it was 20% of the normal blood flow. They said that by taking these drugs via injection in the penis, that it localized the drugs and that they would cure the poor blood flow. The nurse claimed that the drugs would not cause or exacerbate any cancer. I am 63. I am trying to find out what these two medications are and what side effects they may cause. The clinic would not tell me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sorry to say but you must be aware of the treatment to be administered in your body before starting it. It is the standard protocol to take consent for such type of procedure of giving injections in penis, without that one cannot perform it as such.

It is moral and legal responsibility of your doctor to explain you the problem, all treatment alternatives and then proceed further.

Papaverine is a vasodilator drug used to increase blood flow through smooth muscles of the penis. Side effects are allergy, local rash, itching, systemic absorption and nausea, flushed face, headache, dizziness, allergy, weakness, stomach pain, heart rate alterations, stomach pain, etc.

Alprostadil is a naturally occurring form of prostaglandin E1 used for erectile dysfunctions of neurogenic, vasculogenic, psychogenic or mixed form.

Side effects include penile erection longer than 4 hours, irritation in penis, urethra, difficulty or blood in urine, headache, red face with flushing, dizziness, allergy rashes, chest heaviness, fainting, swollen lips, face, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
