We are the parents of a 20-year-old daughter. She was born with cerebral palsey with associated severe mental retardation and cannot communicate health symptoms other than "hurt," "doctor," "sick," etc. and functions at approximately 18 months. Over a year ago, she began flailing her arms violently for brief periods, usually in the evenings. She is not absent as she will stop or look at us if we call her name. The frequency and duration of these "attacks" have gotten progressively worse to the point of lasting up to 7 hours at a time with little rest in between the flailing. It almost happens nightly now, usually with an accompanying low-grade fever (up to 100 or a bit more). She has now begun to sweat profusely when this happens. I have taken her to a pediatrician, neurologist, ENT, a general practictioner....no one knows what this happens (I can only show them a video). She checks out fine with the cursory office exam...and bloodwork recently came back OK. We are very frustrated. We do have an appointment at a major hospital in January but are desperate to help her when this happens. When she is not having an "attack," she is happy and fine. (PS we cannot get x-rays, etc. without putting her under general anesthesia so this has not been done.) We give her up to 600 mg of ibuprofen but not sure that helps or it just stops on its own. Any ideas???
