TPHA Positive. Urine And Blood Tests Show Negative Results. How Is That Possible?

Hello.
I have a brother and he was applying as a Welder in abroad but he was failed due to he was positive in Tpha. He was really shocked because he had no Idea where'd he got that disease since He only had sex with his wife and his wife was a virgin. Just yesterday he went to the doctor and have chiecked his blood and urine but it was negative. I just wanna ask if how'd they come up with that result? Is it possible to be positive in TPHA knowing that you really are clean? Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your Query. The First and foremost thing in establishing the Diagnosis of Syphilis is Clinical signs and symptoms. Because there are False positive reactions are possible for TPHA test. Most common false positive antigens are non- pathogenic treponema antigens and other spirochetes.Sometimes leprosy antigen may show false positve reaction. So there is a possibility for TPHA positive without urine and blood negative results. If you need further confirmation, You can do some other tests like TPI and FTA-ABS

Thank you
