Swollen And Painful Thumb Due To Injury. Broken?

My name is Catherine and I slammed my fist into a wall (not my finest moment) but now the area below my R thumb is swollen and extremely painful. I have very limited ROM now and cannot touch my thumb to my ring finger or my pinkie. It is also very painful to touch my thumb to my middle finger. Is there a chance it is broken or just swollen?

Thanks for writing to health care magic!

I have read your question carefully and from that it is evident that you have a swelling and pain below your right thumb.

From my experience I can say that as you have a rather significant swelling, difficult and almost impossible movement of your thumb after injury, it looks more like a fracture. however one can be absolutely sure only after X ray.

Had I been at your place I would surely see a doctor, preferably an orthopedician and get an x-ray hand and wrist. The particular angle of X ray in your case can be told accurately by looking at your injury only.

Till then you can do cold compress on that area softly, it would help in reducing both swelling and pain. You can use some pain killer sprays like, volini etc, over there, or may be take a pain killer like, voveran 50mg for some days to help pain and let it heal.

Most importantly, don't move it a lot, avoid using that hand till you see a doctor.
Hope this answer helps you taking care of your injury.
