Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
After weaning myself off clonidine, blood pressure is between 140 & 145 but with 10 mg norvasc, 100 losartan & 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide cp. Trouble is heart rate now is up to 100 to 115 bpm after starting norvasc. What do I need now to lower heartbeat?
Brief answer: Palpitations and elevated heart rate is a common side effect of Norvasc (amlodipine), and usually occurs when first starting the drug when the dose is increased.
Detailed answer: Norvasc (amlodipine) belongs to the class of drugs called dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (CCBs). This type of medication lowers blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels. However, when the vessels dilate the body's sympathetic reflex systems are activated and cause an increase in heart rate.
Palpitations with elevated heart rate are common when first starting Norvasc or when the dose is increased. From my experience, this should subside over the next weeks as the body gets used to the drug and stops activating the sympathetic reflex responses. You can talk with your doctor about your concerns and they might decrease the dosage or change to a different drug.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Shapiro, General & Family Physician
