Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband is 80 yrs old and has been taking 20mg of lexapro for about 20yrs. He has never been depressed and has been taking it for anxiety. He is thinking of talking to his doctor and trying to go off it because he is on lots of other meds. Also, he is having trouble losing weight, can t have an erection and his memory loss is increasing. All of this could be due to his age but if he doesn t feel any different without it, that is one less pill he needs to take. Can any of these symptoms be related to this drug?
Hi, Lexapro (escitalopram) can cause decrease in libido and ejaculation disorders and can also add up to the erectile dysfunction. But as you have mentioned, it can also be due to age. And again weight gain is also a side effect of Lexapro. But we have to look whether stopping Lexapro will help in weight loss or not. If your husband is on Lexapro for anxiety, then you can discuss with your doctor about tapering Lexapro slowly. Hope the above information helps. Thanks.
