Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am on 20mg Propranolol bid for essential tremors. I am having thigh pain and hip pain in left leg and although X-rays show arthritis in left head of Femur, I m wondering if the drug could be responsible seeing it seemed to have become painful since I ve been on it .also my gait is now also more unsteady .been on drug about3months and my gait seems to be more unsteady since beginning drug.
Hello, Welcome to HCM. I understand your concern. Propronolol is not known to cause arthritis of femure. But it may give rise to bone and muscle pain. Arthritis of femur take much longer time than just 3 months to develop. The process of joint damage may start at early age but may become apparent in middle ages like 50-70 yrs. Continuous trauma due to overuse of joint (like in sports & certain occupations) is most common cause. So your observation may be coincidental. In my opinion, you should continue propronolol as it is but please also talk with your doctor in this regard. Take advice of orthopedic doctor for arthritis of hip. I hope this will be helpful. Thanks for using HCM. Do ask if any further question is there. Take care.
