Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Knee After An Injury

I fell on the ice at work today, and pretty hard. The ice was raised up in spots from vehicles driving over the snow and then getting freezing rain on it. I landed on my left knee, but a raised up area of ice hit my leg about 2 inches lower then the knee. It is swollen up as high as my knee now, 12 hours later, very hard and sore to the touch. It don t hurt anymore walking then sitting and is turning a nice blue. My husband thinks I should get it checked. Do you? Thanks, Melanie Cupps

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Swollen knee after falling on ice is due to injury to the soft tissues around the knee joint.
Knee swelling can be due to collection of fluid in the knee joint.
The swelling turning blue suggests a hematoma formation.
Hematoma is formed due to soft tissue injury and bleeding into the soft tissues.
Hematoma resolves spontaneously after a week.
However, the knee swelling needs to be investigated for look for status of cartilages and capsule of the knee joint.
Thus, consult an orthopediacian for clinical assessment and relevant investigations.
A MRI of the knee joint will determine the status of soft tissues.

Thanks and take care
