Suggest Treatment For Swollen And Painful Bruise On An Ankle

Hello, I hit my ankle very hard with the blade of an axe three weeks ago. I couldn't put any weight onto it whatsoever for about a week without being in serious pain. I went to hospital but was dismissed as I was told it was only a bruise, however it was very swollen and bruised and looked more serious to a number of friends. It is still badly swollen and bruised, it is still tender and painful to touch. I am getting pins and needles in my foot and my ankle is producing a clicking noise every time I move it. The area I hit has a small lump and it feels different to my other ankle so I am worried that there is a serious injury that needs to be treated but I don't want to waste hours in the hospital to be told to go home again.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns....

As per your complain the first thing that you should do is to get an x ray done to rule out for bony fracture by an Orthopedician..
In case if there is bony fracture then reduction and fixation will be done..
But in case if there is no fracture then it might be only soft tissue injury..
As it is bruised and swollen it is due to soft tissue injury and swelling is due to accumulation of inflammatory fluid, cells, swollen injured fibres and blood..
Bruising is due to blood accumulation in that area secondary to ruptured blood vessels due to injury..
Feeling of pins and needles can be due to inflamed and injured nerve ending in the foot secondary to injury..
I would suggest you that if there is soft tissue injury you can do alternate warm and cool compresses over the foot..
You can apply a heparin gel as well as analgesic gel like Diclofenac in that area..
Take Ibuprofen to relieve pain..
Elevate your leg while lying down..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
