Suggest Treatment For Swelling On Knee After Injury
I fell extremely hard on a boulder while crossing a stream. I made contact directly below my right knee with the rock. It swelled to a golf ball size in less than 2 minutes and was extremely painful. I ve been icing on and off all day and it hasn t gone down. Painful to walk and put weight on and hurts when laying side ways on the couch. Should I go to a doctor or wait it out?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Your symptoms suggest possible injury inside the joint. Knee joint being weight bearing joint, needs to be taken care of in time. I would suggest to continue rest, ice and consult an orthopedic doctor- for expert physical examination and investigations as per need followed by cause specific treatment. Till then you can take pain medicine over the counter for some pain relief.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
