Suggest Treatment For Sprained Ankle In An Elderly Person

My mother, who is 93, sprained her ankle this past Wednesday. She initially had pain, but that subsided quickly. It only causes pain now if she puts weight on it. We used ice during the first 24 to try to control the swelling and brushing, but the swelling is still fairly severe and the bruising quite noticeable. The condition has not changed significantly since Wednesday. Should we continue to apply ice and have her stay off of it as much as possible? The swelling and pain is substantially less in the morning.
