Suggest Treatment For Speech Problem

Hi doctor,I have a speech problem. I can speak fluently only when i repeat the sentence in mind. Otherwise, I replace one word with other. Even when i read many words i times read the words which are not existing. I have the habit of biting the inside lips and cheeks. I can t speak two words ending is S sound continuously, i mean fluently. If i speak them casually, the sounds get very absurd. So, i speak a sentence in mind before I speak out. Please suggest me the remedy for it.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi. In my opinion you have a speech pathology that is more suggestive of a neurological rather than a physical anomaly.

I would recommend that you have a neurological evaluation in the form of a consultation and perhaps an MRI (fMRI). If the neurological evaluation identifies something then you can follow the management for the condition based on what is found. An ENT examination is recommended just to rule out any physical abnormality with the tongue or oral cavity.

If the neurological evaluation is normal then you will need to see a speech therapist who will help train your speech to achieve acceptable fluency and use of comprehension. Please note that speech therapy usually takes a few years before expected results can be achieved. You may also need a psychological evaluation to rule out any obsessive cognitions precipitation your condition.

Speech problems rarely disappear overnight, so if you want a cure, you will need to be patient and take a step wise approach without being hasty and improve your speech with realistic expectations. This is vital for your recovery.

Please do let me know if you have any other questions.
