Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat

My sister-in-law is concerned about pain around her ribs that used to hurt only when she slept, then it started hurting during the day. Now it sounds almost constant. She also has a sore throat and dry tongue fairly constantly. Could these things be related?
