Suggest Treatment For Severe Loose Motion In A Child

Hello Doctor,

My 07 year old son got loose motions.
It started on 24th Jun night but only once. And 25th Jun morning it started- watery and with very bad smell.

And 25th morning we gave him 01 sachet of BIFILAC in luke warm water and it stopped.

But again last night, early morning of 26th Jun he started passing watery motion with foul smell. He passed in the bed itself.

It happened twice. At 6am now we had given him BIFILAC.

Please advice if we have to continue the same medicine or change to Z&D syrup or any other medicine?

Please confirm dosage as well.

Dear James,

Z & D syrup contains zinc which helps in healing damaged intestinal villi and Bifilac is a probiotic which stimulates the immune system & protect the Gastrointestinal tract against infection.

Presence of foul smelling diarrhea is attributed to infection or inflammation in the Gastrointestinal tract.

Under such circumstances, a course of antibiotics need to be taken based on culture & sensitivity reports to control the causative organism.
In addition, give Oral Rehydration Solution (O.R.S) for maintaining the hydration status & electrolyte balance of the body.

The dosage of the medicines will be determined by the weight of your child.
So, kindly consult your Doctor and start treatment as advised.

There is no need to worry, he will be fine.
