Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. I have suffered severe hearing loss - was noticeable first at the end of 2008 where hearing in both ears dropped off from around the 1.5KHz (25db loss) up to 8KHz (50db loss). My right ear has always been marginally worse than my left ear. I started wearing aids from Jan 2009. My ears have continued to decline at a fairly fast rate. As of today, my right ear is now almost completely dead - lost all hearing from 750Hz and above. My left ear is also very bad - hearing drops off from 750Hz (50db loss). Everything from 1KHz up to 8KHz has around 80 to 90db loss. I asked to my doctor 2 or 3 years ago about the potential of my prescribed drugs (hypertension) being ototoxic. She dismissed this as a possibility and said that none of her latest medical books state that to be the case. Are there any online doctors who can confirm if the following drugs are likely to be the cause of my rapid/severe hearing loss? Meds: Ramipril, Felodipine, Bendroflumethiazide. If it is likely that the drugs could be the cause, what would be better alternatives? And is there any likelihood of any recovery of hearing if I was to change my medication? Thank you Rob
