Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Acid Reflux

I have had a bad cough and acid reflux for about 3 weeks. The cough and the reflux caused me to throw up. Over the last week all have increased and I have lost my appetite completely. I have been to my doctor twice - Last Monday and Wednesday. CBC blood panel was fine. Additionally, I went to Gastro doc on Thursday who ordered more labs. Potassium - 2.7, sodium, magnesium all low. Doc called me in and given 2 bags potassium and saline. I went back Friday for more. Last time I threw up was early Friday morning. I seemed to be a little better yesterday but now I just feel worse again. I ve seen a total of 5 doctors this week and all give me contradictory information. I have been prescribed 10 medications this week, outside of what has been administered at urgent care for chest pain and nausea I am 48, female. I live in Bakersfield, California and my insurance is Kaiser. I m also asthmatic and it seems odd that nobody has taken a chest X-ray. My main question is does a heavy cough accompany low potassium?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Hypokalemia (low potassium) level commonly occurs due to vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, hypomagnesemia.

Since you have a severe cough you should get yourself examined & get blood workouts & Imaging test done to rule out early signs of Asthma, COPD, Stress, anxiety & tensions of physical or emotional origin also trigger cough & Asthma. Get treated for GERD, IBS. Stay away from oily spicy food. Food that causes allergy or lactose intolerance. Take boiled food.

Take antacids, PPI's to get relief from acid reflux. Get your liver checked, get Liver function tests done.

Sometimes liver dysfunction may also cause acid reflux & vomiting. Avoid addictions if any. Stay well hydrated. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
