Suggest Treatment For Severe Concussion, Constant Headache And Eye Swelling After Injury

Good Evening, 3 weeks ago my 13year old son was kicked in the head at play time at school whilst playing football, the boy who kicked him had CCF boots on, my son eye swelled up and was very bruised by the time I got him to the doctors he had started ti be sick, the doctor called the ambulance. hospital said he had servere concussion, since then he has had a constant headache and today in class he stated to feel dizzy felt sick and disoriented then the pain in his head got worse, he was then sick, so I took him back to the doctors and ended up back at the hospital, he had a MRI scan, they could not find anything wrong apart from mucosal thickening was noted within the right maxillary sinus, I there something I should buy or do for him to help correct this ?? or should I ask his doctor to refer him to ENT ?? Kind Regards LUCY

Hi,

There are a few issues with your son.
#1
It does sound like a concussion but it does not sound like he is properly being treated. Concussions are not just "go home and rest" and require specialists to manage. Brain rest is the principal treatment. Most Sports medicine doctors can manage concussions and some places have specialized "Concussion Clinics". Unfortunately, children actually do worse than adults if not treated properly and take longer to heal (one of the rare issues where children actually recover less easily than adults).
Some concussions will make a child miss a semester. By not treating a concussion correctly, concussion symptoms can linger and worsen. Imaging is generally not needed for concussions. Major symptoms of concussions include: headaches, light sensitivity, mood changes, concentration problems, fatigue, irritability, and balance problems.
#2
Mucosal thickening is most likely a little bit of allergies. If he has no symptoms, he does not need to see anyone if he has no sinus congestion or nasal congestion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Timothy Wong, General & Family Physician
