Suggest Treatment For Severe Acne

I have tried over 5 prescribed and over-the-counter medications for my acne (pills and topical). And NONE of them are seeming to work. Though I don t have severe acne, it is still very distracting for others when they are talking to me so I get very discouraged. I was wondering what I should try next. Since I don t think acutane is an option for me.

Hi there

I am going to try and list some options for you.
1. If you are a young female, I suggest going on a combined oral contraceptive pill if you have no contraindications for this.

2. Increase your water intake, eat healthy fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid excessive sugar. Consider taking a course of probiotics.

3. Avoid harsh facial products. Use fragrance free, alcohol free solution to cleanse and moisturise eg cetaphil and aqueous based creams.
Try to change your current facial products/ makeup to see if it was worsening the problem. Clean all brushes and sponges thoroughly.

4. You can apply a mild topical steroid to isolated lesions on the face at night eg 0.1% hydrocortisone.
You can also try to wash your face with benzoyl peroxide, but do a patch test first as many people are sensitive to this.
Consider also using a topical retinoid like adapalene gel or differin gel/epiduo.

5. You will also require antibiotics in conjunction with the above unless you respond well to the oral contraceptive.
You can try tetralysal 150 mg twice a day for a month if you are not allergic.
If you prefer a topical you can try a topical antibiotic like azithromycin gel or erythromycin and zinc gel (zineryt)

I do hope this helps.
