Suggest Treatment For Rhinitis

My Physical Parameters: Age: 29 years Height: 5 foot 8.5 Inch Weight: 62 Kg Blood Group: B-ve Food Habits: Vegetarian, Usually don’t eat some of the Green Vegetables BP: Bit on Higher Side (90/130) usually Pulse: Normal Blood Glucose: Normal I am suffering from Rhinitis Type Symptoms for a year now. The specific Symptoms are as below: Symptoms: Irritation in the Nostrils leading to continues sneezing (10-25) then watery/running Nose, Sometime water/redness in eye also. THIS HAPPENS ON ALMOST DAILY BASIS in any season. After continuous sneezing, I try to take water/Gargle & it feels better sometimes but other time it leads to running nose, cold & cough in chest which usually last for 3-8 days. Some time, Cetirizine Helps to reduce symptoms but sometime it does not. Time: Anytime (Day/Night, Every Month/Season, Inside/Outside home). Sometime the above symptom happens continuously for some days at same time soon after I awake from bed. Specific Triggering Conditions: It usually triggers at any moment/time of the day/night but some conditions like Cold Temperature, driving bike especially in evening & without helmet, sometimes due to smoke generated while preparing Food, Dust and sudden change of temperature from hot to cold are the main factors as observed by me. Note: Hot Water/Temperature always helps to reduce above Symptoms. My mom also had/has such problem but now it is controlled with medicines such as Levocetrizine + Montelucast and Fluticasone. Her age is 56 years.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of rhinitis, commonly patients with chronic rhinitis have sinusitis. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT and get X-ray PNS done to detect deviated nasal septum that is triggering rhinitis. You should get blood tests done to see eosinophil count. Chronic rhinitis patients commonly have high eosinophils count (Eosinophilia).

If you are detected with DNS, your treating doctor may suggest surgery. If you have high eosinophil count you should control your diet. Avoid taking food (dairy, wheat, shellfish, nuts, etc.) that will increase your eosinophil count and cause you discomfort. To get relieve from rhinitis you can take non-sedating antihistamines, decongestants and anti-drip anticholinergic nasal sprays. Wash and flush your nose of irritants and mucus and help soothe the membranes in your nose. Do it frequently. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
