Suggest Treatment For Recurrent UTI

A month ago I had a UTI, was treated and got better. It has returned as of today so I took 2 Azo this am. I just urinated and had what looked like a blood clot come out, I know your urine turns a bright orange, but when I had the first UTI my urine never changed color. This time I do have a reddish color to my urine plus the small blood clot. Any ideas? Thank you, Pam

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
If you see clots coming it is hard to know if they come from urine or vagina. Repeating the urinalysis and probably having a urine culture might help rule out urinary infection and also find red blood cells that might tell us about some possible stone scratching the urinary system and causing bleeding which cause clots. An ultrasound of the abdomen might be helpful also.
In females vagina might be a source of the clot also and if the urinalysis and urine culture are normal you will need a vaginal exam also.
If the urine culture shows infection it will also show which antibiotic is effective. If you take antibiotics according to urine culture is very unlikely the infection will repeat. To make sure your infection is cleared repeat urine culture in 3-4 days after finishing the antibiotic.
Meanwhile you will need to drink plenty of fluids, cranberry juice is very good in urinary infection. Make sure you wipe from front to back and if you are sexually active empty your bladder (go to toilet) before intercourse and after so to reduce the risk of recurrence of urinary infections.
Hope this is helpful and answers to your question
