Suggest Treatment For Post-herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) In A 75 Years Old Patient

Treatment for PHN that is effective. I have had PHN for almost one year. I am a vet. And 75 years of age. I get all my medical treatment through the vets. In PHx., az. I am taking medication for PHN now. Gab ape tin and tramado . It does no always work and would like to get off this med. and find something that works more effective. Thank you. Hello,

Gabapentin and Tramadol are the commonly prescribed drugs for post herpetic neuralgia and in your case unfortunately both of them are not effective. You can take Oxycodone and apply Lidocaine or Capsaicin patches, which gives good pain relief. In severe cases steroid injection may be required. Consult your physician and he will direct you accordingly.
