Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea In A 60 Year Old

I m 60 year old active , healthy female. Normal weight. I ve had diarrhea now for 4 days. I ve not taken anything for it. For the most part feel fine and have gone about my regular activities -just having to urgently visit the restroom a time or two a day. What should I be doing to end this? Take Imodium? Something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The most common cause of diarrhea is gastroenteritis, food poisoning, indigestion, infection(salmonella, shigella), food allergy or lactose intolerance.

Take anti-diarrheal(Loperamide, Imodium or Pepto-Bismol) medicine. Get stool examined(R/E & C/S), if the infection is caused by bacteria, you may need antibiotics.

Keep yourself well hydrated, take ORS, soups, juice & plain water. Take banana(raw-boiled or ripe), oatmeal & semi-solid food in small amounts.

Avoid dairy products & stay away from addictions & greasy food. Take boiled homemade food.

If diarrhea is still persistent visit ER, you may need medical support with intravenous fluids & antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
