Hi,

Viral infections are the most common cause for these symptoms though a bacterial infection can also occur as well.In most persons the symptoms last 3 to 10 days. Treatment involves:

(1) Holding off all solid food till there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms. When this 4 hour window occurs, start with very small amounts of solid food.

(2) Fluids are very important to treat or prevent dehydration. Sports drinks such as gatorade or oral rehydration drinks are best. For the first hour, 1 tsp to 1 tbs should be used every 5 mins, if this is tolerated then the amount can be increased. Dehydration is likely contributing to your dizziness.

(3) Probiotics either on their own or in yogurts.

(4) Medications such as Pepto Bismol or Dramamine to help with the vomiting. Pepto bismol would also help the diarrhea though medicines such as Lomitil may help with this helps.

I hope this helps. Let mew know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
