Suggest Treatment For Painful Intercourse During Menstruation

I just had sex with my girlfriend that was a virgin and she was on her period. She said that hit hurt too bad so about 10 minutes into it I stopped and I had gone very very slow in and out hoping the pain would stop sooner. The next day her period stopped. What could be the problem?
