Suggest Treatment For Pain On Foot And Ankles After Exercising

Hi, I do swim exercises 3 times a week. After a few strenuous jogging in place exercises I started kicking harder and tried to get a cross the pool 4 times in 2 minutes. After that the top of my feet hurt and the back and forth at the ankle. Also my left foot developed a pain in the tendon in the arch. I have started on Neurontin 3 times a day. How long can I wait before an EMG test. Do you think acupuncture could help? Thank you, Betty Stanson. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from pain on foot and ankle after exercising. You have pain in the tendon on the arch. Arch pain can occur due to injury to the muscles, bones, ligaments, or tendons of the arch. It can also be due to weight gain, aging, overuse, neurological conditions and physical stress, etc.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by an Orthopedics, get X-ray, CT / MRI, USG done so that the pathology causing the symptoms can be detected and treatment started at the earliest. In the meantime, give rest to the affected foot and ankle, stretch exercises will help to relieve tightness or pain in your feet and arches.

Get connected to a Physical therapist. Do exercises under observation of the physical therapist. You can take NSAIDS, take naproxen, one stat when needed for relieve of pain. You will be treated with night splints, bracing or casting whichever is best for you.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
