Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Joints Caused By Osteoporosis

My thumbs hurt really bad. The knuckle joint into the fat part on palm and into the wrist are what s hurting. I have lupus and my rheumatologist suggested it might be osteoporosis. Possible? I already take a multivitamin daily and a vitamin D wafer weekly. I ve asked him to please give me shots in them to ease the pain but nothing yet.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Treatment of osteoporosis is with bisphosphonates. However, it should be confirmed by DEXA scan first. This is because joint pain is very unlikely to be the presentation of osteoporosis. So we should exclude other causes of your joint pain like osteoarthritis or your own disease may also cause joint pain. You should talk to your doctor in this regards.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
